It was my first time trying out Kelantanese cuisines. I didn't know what to expect and I actually thought it probably quite similar to some other Malay dishes out there. Well, it's not, really.

Taste Of Kota Bahru (TOKB) Café, being the nation's very first military-concept cafe, serves authentic and tantalizing Kelantanese fare such as Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang, Laksam, Nasi Rocket (Nasi Tumpang), and Teh Atom (Teh Tarik Madu) flanked by Japanese as well as Western tidbits like Edamame and Smoked Salmon Canapes.
Why military-concept cafe?
The history behind this cafe literally got its beginnings from "history". "On 8 December 1941, Kota Bahru was invaded by the Japanese. Unbeknown to most, the infamous attack on Pearl Harbour only took place 70 minutes later, and World War II was declared. This point is left in our many history books and we feel that TOKB Café provides an opportunity to learn more about the major role Kota Bahru played in the early years." said Bernard Tung, Director of TOKB Café.
The cafe has a semi-outdoor area for alfresco dining, an indoor air-conditioned area, and a cosy mezzanine floor, all in all, seating around 100 diners comfortably. And for private functions, the area can be further extended to accommodate up to 300 pax!

At here, you can order the rice with your selection of dishes to pair with. We had the Gulai Udang, Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak, Ayam Masak Merah and Ayam Perempah to pair with our rice. They are so flavorful and delicious. Ayam Masak Merah and Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak are my favourites!
It was my very, very first time trying out the dish called Laksam. I must say this is such an interesting dish and it's probably a dish with an acquired taste. I didn't like it as much compare to the rest of the dishes. It is creamy, slightly spicy with lots of shredded vegetable topping.
Nasi Kerabu
This is probably my most favorite dish at TOKB! The sauces and condiments are lovely!

Nasi Rocket with Beef Serunding
This one more of a on-the-go meal, without the fried chicken, it's packed in a way where it's perfect for a takeaway meal!

Here's the interesting part - fans of the cafe can opt to join the Loyalty Programme which will see them accorded with their very own engraved military "dog tag" bearing their key personal details and ranking from Sergeant to General, depicting their discount entitlement beginning from 8% all the way up tp 22%!
